David J. Stern
Commissioner, NBA

Stern generally is considered the most forward-thinking and successful commissioner of a sports league in America today.

Since he took over as commissioner in 1984, revenues in the league have quadrupled, the league has expanded by six teams and it has added a women's league. More importantly, Stern has kept relative labor peace during his watch; the league has not lost a regular-season game due to a strike or lockout, continuing a 52-year streak.

Stern, with right-hand man Russ Granik, also has been instrumental in introducing revenue sharing and a salary cap. He's negotiated successful TV contracts worth nearly $100 million to each team. And Stern has been the driving force behind tougher disciplinary rules, suspending Latrell Sprewell for a year after his altercation with coach P.J. Carlesimo and calling for marijuana to be placed on the list of banned substances.
