NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy has received assurances from team president Dave Checketts that Van Gundy will be asked to return as coach next season, according to published reports today. "It's not really up in the air," Van Gundy told the New York Times. "Dave made it clear to me he wants me back." Van Gundy's job was believed to be in jeopardy when the Knicks almost failed to make the playoffs, but they went on a roll became the first eighth-seeded team to advance past the first round. They trail the San Antonio Spurs 3-1 in the NBA Finals, with Game 5 tonight. Van Gundy said he has no desire to coach elsewhere, but that he and Checketts will wait until after the finals to discuss the future. "I have never wanted to be someplace else," he was quoted as telling the New York Post. "We just have to make sure it's the right thing for everybody," Van Gundy said. "I'm sure it is."
