Low point 2000 All-Star Game nets fewest viewers ever

NEW YORK (AP) -- The television rating for the 2000 NBA All-Star Game was the lowest ever. NBC's coverage of the West's 137-126 win Sunday night got a 6.9 rating and 12 share, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday. That was down 35 percent from the All-Star Game, two years ago, which had a 10.6 rating and 17 share. There was no All-Star Game last year, because of the owners' lockout. The rating also was down 35 percent from the 1995 All-Star Game, the last without Michael Jordan, which got a 10.7/35. When Jordan returned, in 1996, the ratings jumped to 11.7/20, then dropped to 11.2/19 in 1997. Previously, the low rating for an NBA All-Star Game was a 7.8, for CBS in 1979 and for NBC in 1991. The rating is the percentage of television households in the United States tuned to a program, and each point represents 1,008,000 homes. The share is the percentage watching a broadcast among those televisions on at the time.
