Road to recovery Hill undergoes successful ankle surgery

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Detroit Pistons forward Grant Hill underwent successful surgery Friday, two days after he was diagnosed with a broken left ankle. Hill had a pin inserted into the ankle at the Cleveland Clinic. He will be in a cast for four weeks and the Pistons said he is expected to fully recover in time for next season. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Sferra and was overseen by Dr. John Bergfield and Dr. Robert Teitge, the team's orthopedic specialist. Bergfield, who treated Hill during his collegiate career at Duke, also has treated Hill's father Calvin, while he played for the Cleveland Browns. Hill, who already had a deep bone bruise in his left foot, broke the ankle Tuesday night in an 84-82 loss at Miami that gave the Heat a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five first-round NBA playoff series. The Pistons, who haven't won a playoff series since 1991, will start Michael Curry in place of the All-Star forward when the teams meet at The Palace on Saturday. Hill sustained the bone bruise late in the regular season and missed the team's final three games. He played Saturday in the first playoff game at Miami, scoring 13 points, but was clearly in pain. However, treatment and anti-inflammatory medication had Hill feeling better by Monday. He had a good practice and said he was ready to go. He hit his first three shots in Game 2 but said he felt something pop. He had nine points in 21 minutes.
