WASHINGTON (AP) -- The coach with the most victories in NBA history may soon get back in the game.

Lenny Wilkens, who resigned from the Atlanta Hawks last month after a 28-54 season, met with Wizards president of basketball operations Michael Jordan on Tuesday regarding Washington's coaching vacancy.

"They are meeting together," said Wilkens' agent, Lonnie Cooper. "He has a lot of respect for Michael Jordan, and they have a long-term relationship. He felt it very important to meet together. There's no agenda."

Jordan, who is in Chicago, could not be reached for comment. General Manager Wes Unseld declined to comment, although Wizards owner Abe Pollin recently said the team is "very interested" in Wilkens.

Meanwhile, St. John's coach Mike Jarvis said through a university spokesman that "there was no truth to the rumors" that he would be interviewing for the Wizards job this week. The Washington Post, citing an unidentified league source, reported Tuesday that Jordan was to interview Jarvis, who coached George Washington University in the nation's capital from 1990-98.

Jarvis said no one had contacted him about the Wizards job, according to St. John's spokesman Mike Carey.

Jordan has said he would like to hire a coach before the May 21 draft lottery. Other candidates include Darrell Walker, who led the team to a 15-23 record as interim coach after Gar Heard was fired in midseason, and Golden State assistant Rod Higgins. Walker and Higgins are also considered candidates for front office positions.

Wilkens, who has 1,179 wins, coached the Hawks for seven years. He had a winning record and went to the playoffs in each of his first six seasons, but things fell apart quickly this year after the team made a series of trades, including giving up Steve Smith and getting Isaiah Rider.

  • Among those mentioned as potential replacements for Atlanta are college coaches Tubby Smith of Kentucky, Bob Huggins of Cincinnati and Jarvis; NBA assistants Nate McMillan of Seattle and Byron Scott of Sacramento; and former NBA great Isiah Thomas, who owns the Continental Basketball Association and is building a home in Atlanta.
