Only the beginning Intense pre-draft schedule prepares Chandler for NBA life
Tyson Chandler is a 7-foot-1 power forward from Compton, Calif. He is expected to be taken early in the first round of Wednesday's NBA Draft, which can be seen on TNT at 7 p.m. EDT. What a crazy few weeks these have been! Working out for different teams, being interviewed, dissected and analyzed ... it's nerve racking, and it's definitely draining. I am so ready for this to be over -- not that it will get any easier, but at least I will know where I'm going and can focus on playing hard and transitioning to life in the NBA. During the intense period of working out and traveling across the country, I kept thinking that I wasn't even scratching the surface of all the traveling that is ahead of me. I spent more than 30 hours flying last week alone, not including the six hours I spent in a plane on a runway, waiting for the weather to clear. Even after all that waiting, we still couldn't get clearance to take off, and I had to stay an extra night before getting out early the next morning. I'm beginning to wonder if life as a NBA player is as glamorous as it seems. I am only a day away from the draft, and I have made it to New York. There were people everywhere, and I hadn't even left the airport yet. It really is nice being 7 feet tall; crowds are much easier to deal with, and I can check out everyone pretty easily. Once we made it out of the airport, I hit the streets. Rodney White and I toured the city, just people watching! I have enjoyed my workouts thoroughly, but I'm excited that they are over. As crazy as it was flying all over the country, it couldn't have prepared me for these next few days. Now the real madness begins. I get to experience draft week on the biggest stage of all -- New York City. There is so much packed into to these next few days, from interviews to events, to family and friends. I hope I have a chance to actually see the city as well. Even if I don't get to visit the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, I know I will be in New York again ... this is only the beginning. I look forward to getting back to all of you next time, when I know what NBA uniform I will get to call my very own.
