Quotable Sir Charles Barkley touched on many issues during the NBA DraftOn high schoolers in the draft: Everybody judges this by Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady and Kobe Bryant. All those guys struggled in the beginning. They're all great players now, but it's been five years. When you draft a high school player, you're telling your fans and your organization, "We're going to struggle for the next two, three years; be patient with us." I don't think it's fair to the fans, and it's not good for basketball. Right now, we got the Lakers who are really good, and you got the rest of the teams that are really bad.
On his comeback: I don't know. I've got about 25 pounds to go. Aug. 1 is my deadline.
'The Michael and Charles Show' Michael Jordan, on his ailing ribs: "My ribs are feeling a lot better." Barkley: "I'm just glad his little ribs are all right. He's been whining about it for two, three weeks now." Jordan: "You can forget about it, Charles. I'm still the boss, and if you need a job, I advise you to keep quiet. I can only tell you I have a very good player coming to Washington, D.C., and I may not need another." Barkley: "I'm not sure I would even consider coming there unless you up the ante." Jordan: "Stay at TNT. I think that's your best effort." NBA Commissioner David Stern: "I'd like to interrupt the Michael and Charles show to announce the next pick."
On Shane Battier, the sixth overall pick: We finally got a player [picked] old enough to drink.
Advice to Joe Johnson, drafted by Boston at No. 10: Joe, I'm going to give you some advice: Get used to your family being nice to you because they're always going to want to borrow money.
On Gary Payton's situation in Seattle: They've got to trade him because right now they're brutal and right now he's the only good player they got. They have to start over and can get some nice picks for him.
On Chris Webber and Sacramento: You know, everybody can talk about [taking] the best talent available, but if they don't get Chris Webber back, they're going to stink anyway.
