BOSTON (AP) -- New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd's wife and son, heckled by Boston fans earlier in the Eastern Conference finals, did not attend Game 6 on Friday night.

"I guess Jason and Joumana thought it would be best for her not to be here," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "I don't think any of the wives are here."

Kidd was booed every time he touched the ball during Monday night's Game 4 in Boston, which the Nets won 94-92. He said he had no problem with the boos or the chant of "wife-beater" -- a reference to charges that Kidd struck his wife in 2001; the charges were dropped when Kidd underwent anger counseling and paid a fine.

But he said some fans yelled worse things at his wife and 3-year-old son, T.J., and he feared for their safety. Celtics officials promised a secure location for her to watch the game, but the Kidds apparently decided against it.

"I think he'll be more focused on the game," Scott said. "Having your family here after all that has been said would be a little bit of a distraction."

Celtics fans weren't the only ones crossing the line. In Game 5 at Continental Airlines Arena, a fan held a sign reading: "Will someone please stab Paul Pierce"; the Boston star was stabbed multiple times in his face, neck and back at a nightclub in 2000.

Arena officials made the fan take the sign down, and Pierce said he never saw it.
