Why the Suns should win: They’re healthy, more athletic, and they match up well with the Spurs. Phoenix won three of four meetings this season, with its only loss coming in OT. Stephon Marbury (32.5 points, 8.8 assists vs. San Antonio) has the strength and experience to give Spurs second-year point guard Tony Parker headaches. The Suns also have had success limiting Spurs star Tim Duncan by doubling him and fronting him in the post.
Why the Spurs should win: San Antonio’s inside game is just too good. With Duncan and 7-foot-1 David Robinson, the Spurs led the league in blocked shots and ranked second in field-goal percentage allowed. They should take away the inside penetration of Marbury and Penny Hardaway, and force Phoenix to rely on outside shooting. Even if Robinson (sore back) isn't 100 percent, reserve Malik Rose is more than capable down low.
Keep an eye on: Marbury. In the team’s first meeting, Nov. 29 at America West Arena, he scored 26 of his game-high 43 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Suns to a 97-84 victory. It was the most points ever scored in the fourth quarter by a Spurs opponent.
Did you know? The Suns ranked No. 1 in the NBA in 3-point field-goal defense (31.9 percent). The Spurs, led by Bruce Bowen’s league-best 44.3 percent accuracy from downtown, rely significantly on the outside shot.
