Pippen back for Blazers in Game 5

DALLAS (AP) -- Scottie Pippen returned to the lineup for the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night in Game 5 of their first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks.

Playing for the first time since the series opener, Pippen came in wearing a long sleeve over his surgically repaired left knee with seven minutes left in the second quarter. Pippen, showing some mobility, was beaten on defense almost immediately before driving the lane and feeding Damon Stoudamire for an open 3-pointer.

Pippen played three minutes, scoring two points on 1-of-2 shooting. He had a rebound, an assist, a turnover and two fouls. Portland trailed 50-43 at the break.

Pippen had arthroscopic knee surgery March 18 and missed 17 games. He played the last two of the regular season, then went 32 minutes in Game 1. He hadn't even practiced since then and said Tuesday that he wasn't going to play in this game.

Center Arvydas Sabonis, who missed Game 4 with a back injury, and forward Ruben Patterson, who did not practice Tuesday because of the flu, both played in the first quarter.

Portland still didn't have a full bench, though, as Derek Anderson had knee surgery Saturday and is out for the rest of the playoffs.
