SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- San Antonio will honor the NBA champion Spurs in a citywide celebration Wednesday.

Festivities will start with a barge parade along the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio, and then move to the Alamodome, where the team played for nine years before moving into the new SBC Center this season.

"San Antonio throws great parties, and this will be another party to be remembered," Mayor Ed Garza said in a statement released Monday.

The Spurs beat the New Jersey Nets 88-77 Sunday night to win the best-of-seven series 4-2.

Thousands of fans jammed downtown San Antonio after the final buzzer Sunday night to celebrate the win. Motorists inched bumper-to-bumper along the main thoroughfares, often with their passengers hanging out windows.

When the Spurs won their first title in 1999, an estimated 300,000 people gathered on the restaurant- and saloon-lined Riverwalk to watch the team and the championship trophy float down the San Antonio River on barges.

Current and former players, musical acts, local politicians and others will participate in this year's party, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Organizers said a special barge will haul a group of students from the Carver Academy to honor retiring center David Robinson, who spent more than $9 million of his own money to establish the private school for disadvantaged children.

A special ceremony is scheduled for 9 p.m. at the Alamodome.
