After Tony Delk averaged 11.9 points and 3.4 assists during a nine-game Hornets winning streak last spring, coach Dave Cowens said of the rookie, "He's coming on, he really is. He's our point guard of the future." Not so fast. After the season the team signed David Wesley as its point guard of the present. Charlotte wanted an established floor leader; Delk, who played shooting guard at Kentucky, had only begun to make the transition to the point. Though newcomer Bobby Phills will also eat up backcourt minutes, Delk's 34-inch vertical leap and three-point range are welcome in Cowens's quick-paced system. He may or may not be the point guard of the future, but Delk's future is nonetheless bright.
