Coming out of Arkansas-Little Rock, 6'1" point guard Derek Fisher was thought to be a marginal NBA prospect. But Fisher is in the habit of doing more than what's expected. He made a name for himself at the 1996 predraft camps, prompting the Lakers to take him with the 24th pick. As a rookie Fisher played in all but two games and gained a reputation as a strong defender and a hard worker. Fisher impressed Lakers coach Del Harris in this year's FILA Summer Pro League. "Most observers felt he was the best point guard out there," Harris says. Now Fisher is vowing to push incumbent Nick Van Exel for the starting job. "Last fall I just wanted to prove I could play at the NBA level," Fisher says. "Now I want to show I can do as many things on the court as anybody else." |
