Shooting guard Fred Hoiberg has at least one thing in common with his new coach: He, too, is a hero in a small Midwestern town. When Hoiberg starred at Iowa State in his hometown of Ames, he was so popular that he became known as the Mayor. For most of Hoiberg's first two years in Indianapolis, however, he was about as obscure as a DMV clerk. Then last March 26, he scored 21 points against the Mavericks, and two nights later he hit a game-winning three-pointer against the Hornets. Says his coach, who's still the toast of French Lick, Ind., "There's a place for a guy like Fred on my team—and there always will be."
