Mike Dunleavy had just been introduced as Portland's new coach when he was asked about his team's youngest player. How much would Jermaine O'Neal be playing? "In the first half of every game," he responded. To Dunleavy, the 6'11" O'Neal, who'll be 19 this season, is too valuable to sit on the bench. As a rookie out of Eau Claire (S.C.) High, he played in just 45 games last season, averaging 4.1 points in 10.2 minutes. His numbers were much better at the FILA Summer Pro League in Long Beach, Calif.; he averaged 20 points and 7.8 rebounds and played particularly well against top competition. That suggests he deserves the playing time his coach said he'll be getting. "After coaching him in the summer league," Dunleavy says, "I felt a lot better about that statement."
