The Zen Master

Phil Jackson was named the 15th head coach in Los Angeles Lakers history on June 16, 1999. Jackson entered the 2000 season with one of the most impressive coaching resumes in basketball history. With a little help from Michael Jordan, Jackson led the Bulls to championships in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996 and 1997. In his first season with the Lakers, Jackson guided Los Angeles to a league-best 67-15 record and its first appearance in the finals since falling to the Bulls in five games in 1991. The Zen Master, so named for his often-mystical approach to both life and coaching the triangle offense, has a combined 612-208 regular season record and a playoff record of 122-47 heading into the 2000 finals. Jackson's six championships rank second only to the Boston Celtics' Red Auerbach's nine.
