EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey Nets sixth man Chris Gatling has asked the struggling team to trade him, general manager John Nash said Wednesday night after the team lost its fifth straight game.

Nash said the Gatling and Nets coach John Calipari spoke before the game and discussed the situation.

"It's not the first time he's suggested that it might be better if he was in a different situation," Nash said after the Nets blew a 14-point lead and dropped a 94-85 decision to Portland.

"We previously told his agent [David Falk] that if he can find something out there that would be in everyone's interest we would be willing to listen," Nash said. "We would entertain anything, a trade, a draft choice, that's in the best interests of the New Jersey Nets."

Gatling was not in the Nets' locker room after the game. The power forward played 11 minutes and he did not score, missing two shots.

Gatling asked to be traded after the Nets acquired him from Dallas in February 1997. He averaged 19 points that season and 11.5 in 57 games with New Jersey last year.

Gatling has played in all 11 games this season averaging a little more than five points.
