Tuesday's As the Worm Turns Players reportedly want Rodman fined as saga continuesPosted: Tuesday March 16, 1999 08:58 PM
LOS ANGELES (CNN/SI) -- Dennis Rodman remained on a paid, indefinite leave of absence from the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, with neither the player nor team saying anything definitive about the situation. Meanwhile, Turner Sports learned Tuesday that Lakers players voted to fine Rodman for his absence, saying that it can't be classified as "taking care of personal problems." "We don't have any comment," Lakers spokesman John Black said from Minnesota before the Lakers faced the Timberwolves on Tuesday night in the second game of a six-game road trip. "We don't have any idea when he'll rejoin the team." Black reiterated that Rodman was being paid. Rodman, who joined the Lakers last month, receives $12,195 per game. Meanwhile, Rodman hired a publicist -- the Beverly Hills firm of Baker, Winokur and Ryder, which issued a statement late Tuesday: "Dennis appreciates the level of interest that people have taken in his life. He's currently dealing with personal matters and when they are resolved, looks forward to rejoining the Lakers with the same intensity that he's displayed throughout his career. Dennis is thankful for the support of his teammates and the Lakers' management." Rodman, the NBA's leading rebounder each of the last seven seasons, has played in nine games for the Lakers -- all victories. He is averaging 10.3 rebounds in 14.8 minutes of action. Rodman missed practice Saturday, and didn't travel with the team to Sacramento, where the Lakers lost to the Kings 105-101 on Sunday night to snap a 10-game winning streak. Rodman, who turns 38 in May, has been a member of five NBA championship teams including the last three with the Chicago Bulls.
