MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee Bucks Monday requested waivers on veteran point guard Haywoode Workman, who had requested that he be released in hope of winning more playing time with some other NBA team.

The Bucks said they would fill Workman's roster spot by activating rookie point guard Rafer Alston from the injured list.

Workman, 34, had been released by Indiana when the Bucks signed him last season after trading Terrell Brandon. Though the Bucks had acquired Sam Cassell at the time, he wasn't ready to play because of an ankle injury.

Workman immediately got a starting role and was credited with helping the Bucks make the playoffs.

But with Cassell's return in time for the playoffs, Workman went to the bench and has stayed there. He averaged 2.9 points and 1.9 assists in 23 games for the Bucks this season.

Alston, 23, began this season on the injured list with a sprained left ankle.
