Mavs' owner-in-waiting takes next step

DALLAS (AP) -- Internet billionaire Mark Cuban has almost finished his leap from owning Dallas Mavericks season tickets to owning the team.

Cuban won unanimous approval from 11 NBA owners who interviewed him Wednesday in New York. An official vote is next among 28 of the 29 NBA owners. Cuban joins the club if he gets 22 votes.

Deputy commissioner Russ Granik said the vote should happen by a board of governors meeting April 11. Granik said the voting could be before then via fax.

Cuban, cofounder of broadcast.com, has been running the team since agreeing to a deal two months ago. He knew what he was getting because he already had baseline seats near the team bench.

Before the panel of owners handpicked by commissioner David Stern spoke to Cuban, they also interviewed outgoing owner Ross Perot Jr.

"Short meeting, that's a good sign," Cuban said. "I really can't go into details of what was discussed, but it was just what we expected. Had there been issues, I would have been in there a lot longer."

Cuban has injected the Mavericks with an exciting, aggressive Attitude, and he's shown a willingness to do all he can to improve one of the NBA's worst teams.

But his exuberance has stretched the limits. He was chided for renting his guest house to Dennis Rodman and a car to Greg Buckner, and he recently had harsh comments about officials.

"All of these things have to be discussed, but he seems like a good guy to me," said Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss.
