Mum's the word Walker's future with Washington up in the AirPosted: Friday April 21, 2000 10:13 PM
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Michael Jordan and Wes Unseld are keeping quiet about the future of incumbent Washington Wizards coach Darrell Walker. Jordan, the team's president of basketball operations, and general manager Unseld spent much of Friday in meetings as they began putting together a blueprint to overhaul the franchise. While Jordan wants to hire new front-office personnel and trade some of his high-salary players, one of the top priorities will be hiring a coach. Jordan and Unseld did not return calls seeking comment on an ESPN report that Walker, who led the team to a 15-23 record after Gar Heard was fired, would not return as coach. While not a surprising development -- Walker's recent comments indicated he expected to be given a front office job -- a Wizards spokesman said nothing had been made official. Jordan and Unseld botched the firing of Heard, dismissing him immediately after a victory when word leaked that they were planning to hire Golden State assistant Rod Higgins. The players were told prematurely that Higgins would be the new coach, but the Warriors demanded compensation and Jordan called on Walker as emergency Plan B. Jordan has said he expects to name a coach within a month. While giving a mild endorsement to Walker, he recently said the job was "wide open."
