Report: Jarvis visits Washington D.C. Posted: Wednesday May 17, 2000 05:57 PM
NEW YORK (CNNSI.com) -- St. John's coach Mike Jarvis visited the Washington Wizards on Tuesday and appears to be a candidate for the team's coaching job, the New York Daily News reported. On the same day Jarvis visited D.C., the club named Rod Higgins and Darrell Walker, both formerly thought to be coaching candidates, to front-office positions. A third candidate, former Bulls guard John Paxson, has taken himself out of consideration, saying on ESPN radio in Chicago last week that he wants to spend time with his family. That leaves the known candidates on Michael Jordan's list as Jarvis and ex-Atlanta Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens, who several sources say was never a serious candidate, especially after he misspoke and said last week that the Wizards had offered him the job. According to the Daily News, a source at St. John's confirmed that Jarvis had gone to Washington on Tuesday but did not say whether Jarvis had a meeting arranged with the former Chicago Bulls superstar, now Washington's team's president of basketball operations. The two were believed to have had preliminary discussions about the coaching job last Tuesday, according to another source. Jordan was not in D.C. during the day Tuesday, but he was expected to return either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Once he does, he is expected to immediately get to work on selecting a coach, the paper said. Jordan reiterated his intention to make a decision in time for Sunday's NBA Draft lottery. Rob Ades, Jarvis' agent, told the Daily News Tuesday that his client had not heard from the Wizards. St. John's athletic director Ed Manetta said Jarvis had not told him of any job offer. But Jarvis previously said he would talk to Jordan if Jordan was interested as well. Jarvis has ties to Washington, having coached at George Washington from 1990-98. He also coached Jordan in the McDonald's High School All-American Game in 1981.
