Knicks' Ward out six to eight weeks Updated: Sunday November 26, 2000 12:41 AM
NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The injuries for the New York Knicks keep mounting, as guard Charlie Ward will have arthroscopic surgery Monday to clear loose cartilage out of his right knee. Ward told reporters of the surgery after Saturday's 79-75 loss to the Toronto Raptors. He sat out that game and Wednesday's loss at Atlanta, ending a streak of 192 consecutive games. The procedure will be performed by team physician Dr. Norman Scott, and Ward is expected to miss six to eight weeks. He likely will go on the injured list, with rookie forward Pete Mickeal being activated. The 6-2 Ward is in his seventh season, all with the Knicks. The 1993 Heisman Trophy winner is averaging 7.9 points and 4.5 assists. Earlier today, the Knicks activated center Luc Longley and placed center Felton Spencer on the IL. However, Longley has practiced just once with the team and did not play this afternoon. Acquired from Phoenix on September 20 as part of a four-team, 12-player trade that sent Patrick Ewing to Seattle, the 7-2 Longley suffered a knee injury while playing for Australia against France in the Olympics on September 29 and has not played since. Longley, a member of three consecutive NBA championship teams with the Chicago Bulls from 1996-98, spent the past two seasons of his nine-year NBA career with the Phoenix Suns and averaged 6.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 19.7 minutes. Spencer suffered a sprained right knee against Atlanta. He is averaging 1.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in five games.
