MIAMI (AP) -- Alonzo Mourning has made progress in his battle against a kidney disease, but he doesn't expect to play this season.

The Miami Heat center has been sidelined by focal glomerulosclerosis, an ailment discovered during a routine preseason physical in October.

"My diagnosis is improving -- where the doctors are pleased and right where they hoped I would be," Mourning said Wednesday. "There is still no doubt to them I won't be back this year."

Mourning leads Eastern Conference centers in All-Star balloting, but he doesn't expect to play in the game Feb. 11.

"My main objective is to get healthy, and my doctors have told me this season has been written off until that happens," he said. "I'm flattered the fans are voting for me, but I can't do anything about it. I have to listen to my doctors and do what I have to do to get healthy."
