Legal trouble Suns' Kidd arrested on domestic abuse chargesUpdated: Friday January 19, 2001 2:22 AM
PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) -- Police arrested Phoenix Suns point guard Jason Kidd after his wife was injured during an argument on Thursday. Lt. Ron Warner of the Paradise Valley Police Department said Kidd and his wife, Joumana, argued about the feeding of their 2-year-old son Trey. Kidd admitted he struck his wife about 5:30 p.m., resulting in a cut on the inside of her mouth and slight swelling to her lip, Warner said. She called the 911 emergency dispatcher, and officers took her husband into custody, holding him on suspicion of domestic violence assault, a misdemeanor, until about 9 p.m. when he was released to his attorney's custody, Warner said. A Paradise Valley magistrate required that Kidd be in the custody of a third party until he appears in court again. That date had yet to be determined late Thursday night. Kidd also was barred from having contact from his wife, Warner said. Joumana Kidd remained at the couple's Paradise Valley home Thursday night after refusing medical treatment, Warner said. Suns spokeswoman Julie Fie said late Thursday night she had no direct information and an official comment would be premature. Acquired from Dallas in a December 1996 trade, Kidd has 28 career triple-doubles, tying Michael Jordan for sixth on the career list. He scored 15 points and had seven assists in the Suns' 89-80 victory over the SuperSonics on Wednesday night in Seattle.
