HOOVER, Ala. (AP) -- Charles Barkley isn't coming back next year. At least, not to the Bruno's Memorial Classic, where he played in a pro-am on Thursday.

"I'm not planning on being here next year," Barkley said. "I'm going to be busy next year, more than likely."

Presumably, the 38-year-old former NBA star will be trying to make a comeback in the NBA with his pal, Michael Jordan.

"If he wants to do it, and I'm capable of doing it, we're definitely going to do it," said Barkley, from nearby Leeds. "It's just a matter of if we can play well. He thinks he can play well. I think I can play well.

"It's just a matter of going out and getting in shape."

Auburn's Cliff Ellis, basketball coach at Barkley's alma mater, was a playing partner of Barkley on Thursday.

"I really think it's serious," Ellis said. "I really do. I don't think it's hoopla."

Barkley, who retired from the Houston Rockets after last season, has been working out with Jordan's personal trainer and playing ball. He said the plan is for the two former Dream Teamers to test themselves against NBA players in late June or early July to gauge their readiness.

"That's when me and Michael will decide," Barkley said. "I'm a lot closer [to being ready] than people realize."

Even his golf game has improved -- thanks to tutelage from the Michael Jordan of golf, Tiger Woods.

Basketball with Michael, golf with Tiger. "I've got a great life," Barkley said.
