STATELINE, Nev. (AP) -- Hold those thoughts on a comeback for Charles Barkley. He's simply not ready to take on NBA players again.

"I don't think I could play well," he said. "Right now I'm just working out to get in shape. ... There is no way I could play."

Barkley was asked by NBC's Jim Gray during Saturday's coverage of the Celebrity Golf Championship if he was abandoning his comeback plans.

"I'm leaning heavily towards that," he said.

The 38-year-old Barkley retired following the 1999-00 season after rupturing a knee tendon. In the last few months he has floated the possibility of a joint comeback with Michael Jordan, now president of the Washington Wizards.

Jordan cracked two ribs during a basketball workout in June and has not disclosed his plans for next season. Barkley is not eager to see his friend back on the court.

"I hope he doesn't," he said. "If he wants to come back I'll support him. Michael's his own man."
