  The Buzz What it means
Chicago Sun-Times columnist Lacy J. Banks says Michael Jordan should go up against the best of the NBA, namely Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter and Chris Webber, to tell him where he stands before he risks embarrassing himself. The names may not be of the household variety, but a decent bunch has committed to play in the scrimmages, including Michael Finley, Juwan Howard, Penny Hardaway, Jerry Stackhouse, Steven Hunter and possibly Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen.
The completion of the Glen Rice trade officially secures a $3.2 million trade exception for the Mavericks, the prize The Dallas Morning News says they sought most in the deal that also landed Muggsy Bogues in Dallas. That means Miami free agent Tim Hardaway could be headed to Dallas early next week. The Mavs have wanted Hardaway since the start of the free-agent signing period, but wanted the trade exception to acquire him.
When the Magic moved their training camp from Jacksonville to Tampa for this fall, management said it was a facility-availability issue. Moving up the dates of their annual training camp apparently created a problem in Jacksonville. According to the Orlando Sentinel, though, the team moved to Tampa because of the ongoing arena issue in Orlando, hoping to send out some feelers around the Gulf Coast to see how much interest there might be in NBA basketball there.
The Celtics envision Kenny Anderson handling his starting role competently this season. Their public stance is that they are pleased to have Anderson in their employ, despite the fact that the team tried to move him to Dallas before the February trading deadline. The Boston Globe reports that the hiring of assistant Dick Harter has convinced Anderson that he has the backing of the coaching staff. Harter was an assistant with Portland when Anderson played there in 1996-97 and had one of the best seasons of his NBA career.
