SEATTLE (Ticker) -- With much of last season's team still on the roster, the Seattle SuperSonics pulled away in the second half en route to a 96-85 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in the exhbition opener for both teams.

Gary Payton led Seattle with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting and forward Rashard Lewis made 6-of-10 shots and chipped in 13 points.

Seattle led from start to finish, opening a seven-point cushion after the first quarter and taking a six-point advantage into halftime. The closest the Clippers got was three points midway through the second quarter.

The Sonics had a 62-49 lead when they ran off seven straight points.

The only veteran pickup in the offseason, forward Calvin Booth contributed seven rebounds for the Sonics, who won the battle on the glass, 50-39.

Yugoslavian forward Vladimir Radmanovic, the 12th overall draft pick, had seven points for Seattle, which shot 47 percent (39-of-83).

Elton Brand, Los Angeles's most significant acquisition, had little impact. Acquired from Chicago in a draft day trade, he scored three points in 23 minutes.

His former Duke teammate, Corey Maggette, led the Clippers with 16 points. Los Angeles's two first-round picks from last season, Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles, each scored in double figures. Richardson had 14 points but shot just 5-of-17 and Miles added 13 on 5-of-10 from the field.
