Traded F Scottie Pippen to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for C/F Kelvin Cato, F Walt Williams, F Stacey Augmon, G Brian Shaw, G Ed Gray and F Carlos Rogers.
Why: Pippen no longer wanted to play in Houston with Charles Barkley.
What this means: The Rockets gain much needed depth and active bodies, as well as rid themselves of a potential problem. The Blazers add an All-Star forward to a team that won the Pacific Division last year.

Re-sign guards John Stockton (two-year deal) and Jeff Hornacek (one-year deal).
Why: Utah owner Larry Miller needed to keep two key components of offense after losing Shandon Anderson.
What this means: Jazz keep core of team intact in hopes of making another championship run.

Sign free agent guard/forward Shandon Anderson.
Why: Jazz owner Larry Miller was not willing to up Utah's offer to re-sign Anderson, so he went elsewhere.
What this means: Rockets add an active body/slasher off the bench with instant offense ability and solid perimeter defense.

Signed F Charles Oakley to 3-year, $18 million contract.
Why: Toronto able to give Oakley more than $2 million per season.
What this means: Toronto keeps veteran presence in the middle and keeps Oakley out of L.A. or New York.

Acquired the rights to G Steve Francis from Vancouver for Michael Dickerson, Brent Price, Othella Harrington and Antoine Carr.
Why: Francis didn't want to play in Vancouver.
What this means: Houston adds a very athletic, very talented guard who can do it all.

Re-sign G Mitch Richmond to four-year, $40 million deal.
Why: Washington needed to hold onto their leading scorer from last year.
What this means: G Richard Hamilton can ease his way into action.

Re-sign G Terrell Brandon to six-year, $60 million deal.
Why: Brandon wanted to stay in Minnesota and the Timberwolves were one of a few teams that could pay the big bucks.
What this means: With the re-signing of Brandon and Joe Smith, Minnesota keeps young, athletic nucleus together in hopes of improving on last season's .500 season.

F Vin Baker signs seven-year contract.
Why: To stay in Seattle and play alongside Gary Payton.
What this means: Sonics keep their third leading scorer from last season. Team hopes he will commit to losing weight and regaining All-Star form to make a run at Western Conference title.

Traded G Brent Barry to Seattle for G Hersey Hawkins and G James Cotton.
Why: Bulls needed some experience on a very young roster.
What this means: Barry provides Seattle with perimeter scoring and slashing. Will take up some of the slack left by Detlef Schrempf's departure.

Traded C Ike Austin to the Washington Wizards for Terry Davis, Ben Wallace, Tim Legler and Jeff McInnis.
Why: Magic disappointed with Austin's production last season.
What this means: Wizards hope Austin can provide inside presence they have been missing. Magic get backcourt help in Legler and McInnis.

Acquired F/C Lorenzen Wright from the L.A. Clippers for two first-round draft picks.
Why: Provide adequate back up at the forward and center positions.
What this means: Hawks now have 6-foot-11 body who can run the floor in an uptempo offense.

Acquired G Penny Hardaway in a sign-and-trade deal with Orlando. The Suns gave up Danny Manning, Pat Garrity and two first-round draft picks.
Why: Hardaway wanted out of Orlando.
What this means: The Suns now have one of the most potent backcourts in the league with Hardaway along side Jason Kidd.

Traded G Derek Anderson and F Johnny Newman to Los Angeles Clippers for F Lamond Murray.
Why: Cavs thought price of retaining Anderson was too steep.
What this means: Clippers gain talented, athletic guard. Cavs get small forward in Murray who can score.

Traded G/F Nick Anderson to Sacramento for G/F Tariq Abdul-Wahad and future first-round pick.
Why: Magic wanted to get younger.
What this means: Abdul-Wahad brings youth and scoring punch in case Penny Hardaway decides to skip town.

Re-sign G Nick Van Exel, sign G George McCloud.
Why: Needed to keep floor leader in Denver and continue rebuilding process.
What this means: Re-signing Van Exel keeps Antonio McDyess happy, signing McCloud adds much needed outside scoring threat.
