PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Sean McGonagill scored 19 points and Andrew McCarthy had a double-double off the bench to lead Brown in a 65-56 win over Rhode Island on Wednesday night, the Bears first win over the Rams since 2001.
The Bears (4-4) trailed 32-30 at halftime, and opened the second half on a 10-2 run. McCarthy's dunk put Brown up 40-34 with 17:03 remaining.
Rhode Island (1-6) brought it within two, 55-53, with 6:16 left but Brown answered with a 5-0 run. Stephen Albrecht's 3-pointer put the Bears back in control, 60-53, with 4:31 left.
Albrecht finished with 17 points and McCarthy had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Bears, who snapped a nine-game losing skid to Rhode Island.
The Rams were led by Jamal Wilson with 18 points.
Brown, which was 12-3 last season in games with positive assists/turnover ratio, had 16 assists and just 12 turnovers against the Rams.
