NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Kyle O'Quinn had 22 points and 14 rebounds to help Norfolk State defeat Long Island University 73-62 on Wednesday night.
The Spartans kept Long Island at bay by making 19 of 25 free throws, with O'Quinn hitting 10 of 12 from the line.
Norfolk State (7-4) ended the first half on an 8-1 run to build a 35-24 halftime lead. The Blackbirds (5-6) cut the deficit to one, 49-48, after a dunk by Julian Boyd but could never overtake the Spartans. Two free throws by O'Quinn with 1:44 remaining gave the Spartans their biggest lead at 71-58.
The Spartans outscored Long Island 21-13 on second-chance points despite being outrebounded 41-40.
Chris McEachin added 12 points and Quasim Pugh had 10 for the Spartans, who have won three of their past four games.
Boyd scored 13 points and Jamal Olasewere added 12 for the Blackbirds, who lost their second straight.
