HOUSTON (AP) -- Juan Fernandez scored 23 points and reached a career milestone, Ramone Moore added 15 points, and Temple pulled away in the second half Monday to beat Rice 77-70.
Fernandez, a senior, came into the game needing three points to reach 1,000 for his career. He got to 1,001 on a layup 5:10 into the game, then kept scoring. For the game, Fernandez was 8 of 18 from the field, including 5 of 7 on 3-pointers.
Aaron Brown scored 10 points for Temple (7-3), and Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds.
Arsalan Kazemi picked up another double-double for Rice (7-4) with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Lucas Kuipers led Rice with 16 points.
The game was the second meeting between Rice and Temple, both of which have the Owls as their mascot. Temple won the previous matchup as well - 70-59 on Dec. 29, 1948.
