LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) -- Darshawn McClellan scored 15 points and J.J. Thomas added 12 to lead Louisiana-Lafayette past Florida Atlantic 67-55 on Saturday in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams.
Thomas made 66.7 percent (6 of 9) of his shots from the field and McClellan shot 57.1 percent, knocking down two 3-pointers in the process.
Louisiana-Lafayette (7-8) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead before Greg Gantt scored FAU's first basket with 15:51 left in the first half. Louisiana-Lafayette took a 36-29 lead into halftime and expanded that lead to 14, 62-48, in the second half behind a Josh Brown layup.
Brown finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Despite committing 14 turnovers, the Ragin' Cajuns recorded nine blocked shots and outshot FAU (4-10) 45 percent (25 of 45) to 37 percent (22 of 59).
Gantt led FAU with 15 points and Kore White chipped in with 10.
