LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) -- Stan Okoye scored 27 points, including seven in overtime to lead Virginia Military Institute over Presbyterian 78-70 Saturday.
D.J. Covington's layup put the Keydets (6-7, 1-2 Big South Conference) ahead 65-63, 17 seconds into the extra period. Then, after a turnover by Presbyterian's Al'Lonzo Coleman, Okoye hit a 3 to give the Keydets a five-point lead with 4:02 remaining.
Josh Johnson pulled the Blue Hose (7-6, 1-2) within three, 68-65, on a jumper with 3:32 left. But VMI answered on a 6-2 run - featuring four points by Okoye - over the next 2:44, to snap a two game skid.
The Keydets, who shot 87 percent from the free-throw line (20 of 23), were 8 of 8 in overtime.
Keith Gabriel finished with 17 points for the Keydets, who gave up 20 points fewer than their average allowed by an opponent.
Khalid Mutakabbir led the Blue Hose with 24 points.
