CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Kevin Hartley scored 14 points and his tip-in with 1:02 remaining put Gardner-Webb ahead to stay in a 55-52 nonconference victory Saturday over College of Charleston.

Tashan Newsome added 12 points for the Runnin' Bulldogs (18-11), of the Big South Conference, who have won five consecutive games. His three jumpers in a span of 1:14 to give Gardner-Webb a 49-47 lead, but Anthony Thomas' layup for the Cougars (20-9) tied it 19 seconds later.

Neither team scored for the next 3:15 until Hartley tipped in a Newsome miss.

After Charleston's Trent Wiedeman missed two free throws that could have tied the game, Hartley missed one but got the rebound and made two from the line for a 53-49 lead with 16 seconds left.

Andrew Lawrence scored 16 points for Charleston, of the Southern Conference, which shot a season-low 33.3 percent (18 of 54).

Gardner-Webb shot 36.5 percent (19 of 52).
