CHAMPAIGN, Illinois (Ticker) -- Nick Smith came off the bench to make all six shots and all nine free throws, scoring a career-high 22 points as No. 20 Illinois raced to an early lead and cruised past Big Ten Conference rival Ohio State, 85-63.
Smith was one of the heroes in Illinois' overtime win on Saturday and helped the Fighting Illini run their home winning streak to 23 games. Dee Brown chipped in 16 for Illinois (10-2, 1-0 Big Ten), which had six players in double figures.
The Illini opened a 39-22 halftime lead with stifling defense as they held Ohio State to 29 percent shooting (6-of-21), including 0-of-6 from the arc.
Terence Dials led Ohio State (8-6, 0-1) with 11 points.
Illinois has won the last three meetings between the teams, including last season's conference tournament championship.
Ohio State had an early 5-4 lead following a three-point play by Velimir Radinovic just under four minutes into the contest. But Rich McBride drained a 3-pointer to ignite a 29-6 run that busted open the game.
Brown had 12 points in the spurt and Smith chipped in 10 - including seven straight at one point.
The Illini pushed the lead to 37-13 with just under four minutes left in the half but the Buckeyes closed the period with a 9-2 run. Ohio State twice got within 11 points early in the second half but were unable to draw any closer and trailed by as many as 24 in the final minutes.
Illinois has won five straight conference openers and is 45-1 at Assembly Hall over the last 3 1/2 seasons.
