MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Travis Diener recorded 21 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds as Marquette pulled away late for an 87-72 victory over Toledo in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.
Marquette, the first team to miss the NCAA Tournament after reaching the Final Four the previous season since Minnesota in 1998, only led, 65-63, after Toledo's Keith Triplett made a 3-pointer with 12:22 remaining.
But the Golden Eagles put away the game with a 20-4 spurt, opening an 85-67 cushion on Joe Chapman's two free throws with 3:41 to play.
Steve Novak scored 17 points and Chapman added 13 for Marquette (18-11), which will host a second-round game.
Triplett recorded 20 points for the Rockets (20-11), who finished second in the Mid-American Conference West Division.
