Rutgers 76, Temple 71

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Rutgers freshman Quincy Douby has a knack of coming up big against Temple.

Douby scored a season-high 28 points and Ricky Shields added 14, eight rebounds and eight assists as the Scarlet Knights defeated Temple, 76-71, in a first-round game of the National Invitation Tournament.

A guard from Brooklyn making his first start, Douby shot 7-of-14 from the field, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. He had 21 points on December 3 in a 77-67 triumph over the Owls.

Rutgers never led in the first half but took control with a 19-4 run early in the second half behind 11 points from Douby. The Scarlet Knights took their first lead, 45-44, with 13:42 left on a layup by Adrian Hill and stretched it to 50-44 on a jumper by Marquis Webb with 11 1/2 minutes to go.

Herve Lamizana chipped in 13 points and Webb finished with 10 for Rutgers (17-12), which snapped a three-game losing streak. The Scarlet Knights also broke a three-game NIT skid and will play Rhode Island or West Virginia in the second round.

David Hawkins had 25 points and Mardy Collins 22 as Temple (15-14) fell to 20-13 all time in the NIT.
