PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (Ticker) -- Minutes after entering the postseason, Boston University was leaving it.
The Terriers never led as they were trounced, 80-52, in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament by Rhode Island, which used a balanced attack to cruise to an easy win.
Steve Mello scored 13 points, Dawan Robinson added 12 and Terrence Mack and Brian Woodward 10 apiece for the Rams (20-13), who advance to face an opponent to be determined Thursday. They reached the second round of the NIT last season.
Rhode Island was sparked by the return of Robinson, its leading scorer who missed all but four minutes of an Atlantic 10 Conference tournament loss with a sore back. It sped to a 9-0 lead and held a 43-22 halftime advantage.
It was a quick end to a solid season for the Terriers (23-6), who set a school record for wins and entered the America East tournament as the top seed. But BU was stunned by Stony Brook in the quarterfinals and trampled by URI.
Chaz Carr and Rashad Bell each scored 14 points for BU.
Terriers coach Dennis Wolff fell to 0-3 all-time against the Rams, who improved to 22-10 in the all-time series.
