Hawaii 85, Utah St 74

LOGAN, Utah (Ticker) -- Utah State looked flat, then got steamrolled.

Michael Kuebler scored 28 points and reserve Jeff Blackett had 18 as Hawaii pasted Utah State, 85-74, in a first-round matchup in the National Invitation Tournament.

Utah State (25-4) had the best record of any team not on probation to be snubbed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee since 1985. The Aggies hung around for the first 14 minutes in this one but enabled Hawaii (20-11) to close the first half with an 18-8 burst and never recovered.

The Rainbows shot 65.5 percent (19-of-29) in the first half, opening a 43-32 lead.

Utah State failed to turn up the defense in the second half, enabling Hawaii to shot 58 percent (15-of-26). The Aggies got within 69-61 with 5:53 to go, but Blackett hit some big shots down the stretch and Utah State never got any closer.

Julian Sensley had 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals for Hawaii, which entered the tournament on a three-game losing streak.

Spencer Nelson had 24 points for Utah State, which fell to 2-7 all-time in the NIT.
