(8) Oklahoma St 91, Northwestern State 53

STILLWATER, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- John Lucas III scored 24 points and Joey Graham scored 18 as No. 8 Oklahoma State crushed Northwestern State, 91-53, in the season opener for both teams.

The Cowboys shot 57 percent (31-of-54) in their first outing since reaching the Final Four in April.

"It was not a pretty game," Cowboys coach Eddie Sutton said. "I think we are happy that we won the game, but we certainly did not play very well."

Graham, a preseason Player of the Year candidate, had 15 points in the first half to key a 26-10 run which gave the Cowboys a 39-22 advantage at the half.

"We came out with a lot of enthusiasm and carried it into the second half," Graham said. "As a team, we really need to buckle down on defense."

"Joey took control at the beginning," Lucas said. "As a point guard, you keep feeding him. You know he had a mismatch problem."

Ivan McFarlin scored 13 points and freshman JamesOn Curry scored 11 for Oklahoma State, which has beaten the Demons in each of the last four seasons.

Jermaine Spencer scored 12 points to lead Northwestern State, which committed 28 turnovers and went 2-of-13 from the foul line.

"When playing a team like Oklahoma State," Demons coach Mike McConathy said. "You have to take care of the basketball if you want to get easy buckets. We turned the ball over and they got so many run-outs. Things like that killed out spirits."
