CHAMPAIGN, Illinois (Ticker) -- Dee Brown led four players in double figures for No. 5 Illinois in an 87-67 victory over Delaware State in the season opener for both teams.
Brown scored 17 points despite taking only six shots from the field. He hit 4-of-5 3-pointers and made all three of his free throws.
Luther Head and James Augustine each added 15 points and Deron Williams had 12 for Illinois. Augustine had seven rebounds and Williams dished out six assists.
Illinois shot 64 percent from the field (35-for-55) and opened up a 50-37 lead at the half. The Illini were especially deadly from beyond the arc, draining 12-of-22 attempts.
Jahsha Bluntt led the Hornets with 17 points and Bruce Davis chipped in with 15 points in only 19 minutes.
Delaware State stayed with the Illini through much of the first half, holding a 28-23 lead with just over eight minutes left before Illinois went on a 15-2 run to take control.
