(13) Louisville 89, BYU Hawaii 79

LAIE, Hawaii (Ticker) -- Paradise proved to be a bit too close for comfort for No. 13 Louisville.

Larry O'Bannon and Taquan Dean scored 18 points apiece as the Cardinals eked out an 89-79 victory, edging Division II BYU-Hawaii.

Making its 11th trip to Hawaii, Louisville (1-0) overcame a strong shooting performance by the Seasiders (0-1), improving to 19-10 all time on the islands.

The Cardinals, who have won 10 of their last 12 season openers away from Freedom Hall, will face Iowa in the first round of the Maui Invitational on Monday.

O'Bannon made 7-of-8 free throws and Dean finished with four 3-pointers for Louisville, which closed the game with a 9-2 run.

Ellis Myles, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, scored 18 points for Louisville, which had Player of the Year candidate Francisco Garcia fouled out of the contest with just 10 points.

Austin Smylie scored 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting and collected 10 rebounds for BYU Hawaii, which played without point guard Paul Peterson in the second half.

Thomas Watkins scored 17 points for the Seasiders, who missed just two of 23 free throws and finished with 10 3-pointers.
