MAUI (Ticker) -- Daniel Gibson and No. 13 Texas did not let their disappointment from a semifinal loss to Iowa on Tuesday affect them a day later against Tennessee in the Maui Invitational.
Gibson scored 19 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the Longhorns routed the Volunteers, 95-70, in the third-place game at the preseason tournament.
Kenny Taylor added 16 points and P.J. Tucker, Sydmill Harris and Brad Buckman chipped in 11 apiece for Texas (3-1), which was edged by Iowa on Tuesday, 82-80. Tucker missed a game-tying attempt just before the buzzer in the defeat.
In this one, the Longhorns scored the first four points and led thereafter. After taking a 46-35 advantage into the break, Texas allowed Tennessee to climb within 48-44 before Gibson nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to trigger a 15-4 run.
Jason Klotz collected 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Longhorns, who held a 44-27 advantage on the glass.
C.J. Watson scored 19 points to pace the Vols (2-2), who lost to North Carolina in the semifinals, 94-81.
Tennessee shot 41 percent (24-of-59) and allowed Texas to connect on 53 percent (33-of-63).
Both teams committed 16 turnovers but the Longhorns had 18 pionts and the Vols just eight.
