CHAMPAIGN, Illinois (Ticker) -- Winless Chicago State did its best but proved no match for Luther Head, Dee Brown and top-ranked Illinois.
Head scored 17 points and Brown added 15 and nine assists as the Illini cruised past the Cougars, 78-59.
Illinois, which moved up from third in the rankings just hours before the game, shot 51 percent (32-of-63) as it improved to 7-0 this season.
Head scored 14 points and Brown 10 in the first half to help the Illini take a 47-32 advantage into the break.
Deji Akindele recorded 14 points and Tony Weeden 13 for Chicago State (0-5), which was facing a top-ranked team for the first time in school history.
Illinois held a 38-21 rebounding advantage.
The Illini committed 18 turnovers but had 22 assists. The Cougars had 19 turnovers but just seven assists.
Chicago State got to the line far more frequently than Illinois, making 16-of-21 attempts while the Illini sank just 5-of-8.
