TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (Ticker) -- Kennedy Winston and Earnest Shelton both helped put away any dreams of an upset for No. 14 Alabama.
Winston scored 24 points and Shelton added 19 as the Crimson Tide won their sixth consecutive game, 76-54, over Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
Shelton, who received his management degree Saturday morning, became the 36th player to score 1,000 points for the Crimson Tide (10-1) when he nailed a jumper to give Alabama an 18-10 lead.
The milestone came in the midst of a 16-4 run that put the Crimson Tide on top for good. Winston buried a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer as Alabama took a 35-27 lead.
Alabama turned up the intensity in the second half by closing the contest with a 22-4 spurt and holding the Islanders (7-2) to just one basket in the final nine minutes.
"I thought our defense in the last five or six minutes of the game was really good," Alabama coach Mike Gottfried said. "Our team, on defense, is getting there. We aren't there yet. We just need to sustain what we are doing like we did those last few minutes."
Winston grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds to help the Crimson Tide to a 45-29 advantage on the boards.
"I knew we had to make something happen," Winston said. "We found a breakdown in their zone the last seven or eight minutes and that was the difference in the game."
The Crimson Tide tied a season-low for points allowed and gave Gottfried an 86-13 home record in seven seasons.
Aaron White scored 13 points and Thomas Bailey added 11 for the Islanders, who played their second game in 18 days and had a school record five-game winning streak snapped.
