Jason Kidd, Nets No player has meant more to his team so far this season. His unselfish play and leadership have helped the Nets turn it around at both ends of the floor, tranforming them from draft lottery to best record in the East. |
| Coach |
 |
Flip Saunders, Timberwolves Long one of the NBA's most underrated coaches, Saunders has seized the spotlight this season. Nobody has used the the new rules to better effect, specifically a devilish matchup zone. Besides, we had him as our preseason choice. |

Jamaal Tinsley, Pacers Tinsley has stepped right in and taken the reins of a veteran club coached by Isiah Thomas, one of the greatest point guards in NBA history. Not bad for a guy
who wasn't drafted until the 27th pick. His steady play for a contending team
gives him the slight edge over Memphis' Pau Gasol and Shane Battier -- for
now. |

Sacramento Kings Even without Chris Webber for the first month, they have still managed to tie the Lakers for best record in the first half. They've also been fun to watch,
and an inspiration to the rest of the league. Instead of sulking after being
swept by L.A. in the playoffs a year ago, they have come back stronger than ever.

Sixth Man |
 |
Tim Thomas, Bucks Thomas has been one of the keys for Milwaukee, the top contender in the East.
Versatile enough to play four positions, he has filled in for injured Glenn
Robinson much of the past month, but he never complains about having to come off the
bench. |
Most Improved |
 |
Wally Szczerbiak, Timberwolves He was pretty good last year, but Szczerbiak has taken his game to near All-Star level this season. Taking advantage of his shift to shooting guard, he has become the team's second scoring option to Kevin Garnett while maintaining a 51.7 field-goal percentage. |
