AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- National player of the year LeBron James will take the summer away from basketball after breaking his left wrist Saturday in an AAU game in Chicago.

James was going up for a dunk when he was undercut by C.J. Walleck of the Chicago Rising Stars during the Mac Irvin Summer Basketball Classic at Julian High School.

James -- who was playing for the Northeast Ohio Shooting Stars -- fell and landed hard on his left wrist. He was taken by ambulance to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

A hospital official says James broke his left wrist in two places. He's expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

James will be a senior this fall at Akron's Saint Vincent-Saint Mary High School. He averaged 29 points, 8.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists last season for Saint Vincent-Saint Mary.
