BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) -- Shots were fired in the air as hundreds of thousands of jubilant Yugoslav fans hit the streets early Monday to celebrate the country's title in the basketball World Championships in Indianapolis.

The huge flag-waving and car-honking celebration after Yugoslavia's 84-77 overtime victory over Argentina on Sunday was an unprecedented outpouring of patriotic sentiments.

"The victory is so much sweeter as it was scored in America, the cradle of basketball," former Yugoslav team captain Aleksandar Djordjevic said.

It was the fifth gold medal in the World Championships for Yugoslavia, which became the first team to repeat as world champion since Brazil in 1963.

On the way to the title, Yugoslavia beat the United Sates in the quarterfinals.

"Vlade Divac for President!" fans shouted in reference to the Sacramento Kings' star center.
